Phonics

Phonics at St Stephens is delivered through the recognised government programme ‘Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS)’. It allows teachers to support and deliver synthetic phonics with the use of decodable books to reinforce the phonics skills learnt daily.  The lessons themselves are fun and interactive allowing children to fully engage in the lessons.

Each day, the children revisit phonemes taught from previous weeks, recognise and identify harder to read and spell words, read new words with the new phoneme, apply their knowledge when reading sentences and consolidate in their apply (activity) book.

We want children to be lifelong readers and enjoy reading different genres. The skills from phonics are transferred into their whole class reading sessions, individual reading sessions and English.
