Oracy
At St Stephens, Oracy skills are a fundamental part of children’s communication and learning. The ability to listen carefully and engage in effective conversations is an essential life skill for all children. Therefore, we endeavor to provide children with frequent opportunities to listen to others and respond in a thoughtful way. We encourage all responses to be given in ‘loud and proud’ full sentences using sentence stems provided where applicable.
Children are encouraged to share ideas with talk partners and small groups, building confidence to speak in a range of situations.
Children have regular opportunities to explore ideas and opinions in class Philosophy for Children lessons, where they take turns to share their ideas about ‘Big Ideas’. They formulate questions to explore and learn how to build on, contradict or present new lines of enquiry through discussion and listening to their peers.
We use the oracy strands suggested by Voice 21, as our framework for teaching and learning speaking and listening skills.
